This IDC study reviews HPC market results during this challenging period, based on our supply-side research, and then projects results for the remainder of the year (i.e., full-year 2009). Not surprisingly, the HPC market, like many other IT sectors, suffered from the contracted global economy in the first half of 2009. Compared with the same period a year ago, HPC hardware revenue was down 16% in the first half of 2009. On a sequential basis, revenue in 2Q09 declined about 9% from 1Q09, while unit shipments remained relatively flat.
According to Jie Wu, senior research analyst, "In the first half of 2009, HPC vendors and the rest of the technology sector continued battling against the depressed global economy."
