There are estimated to be more than million dollar businesses providing professional beauty and beauty related services that experts estimate could generate revenues a year. The market is changing, and new types of players include national franchises and spas. Their distribution mirrors that of the population and is concentrated in the larger cities in Mexico.

Data sources consulted for this report include - among others -

  • trade and professional organizations, organizers of exhibitions, training centres, and their publications,
  • product suppliers (manufacturers and distributors) and their company reports and web sites,
  • along with the more than 50 operators of businesses providing professional beauty services, that is, important hair and beauty salons, spas, and medspas. Another 20 were also contacted but for variety of reasons felt unable to contribute.

    Other sources include Diagonal Reports (DR) research - the most recent, as well as previous.

    The market experts consulted stress the shortage of accurate, up-to-date data. They note that the reference year for nationwide data can be two or more years ago. This is because large-scale surveys of this fragmented market are carried out and updated infrequently, usually every three years. The report refers to the latest available data, from organizations such as CANIPEC.

    The mapping of some segments has only begun, for example, the newly established spas and spas in hotels.

    Experts note that both suppliers and salon / spa salon / spa operators are private companies. They are not obligated to make their financial data public. Further, suppliers tend to be familiar only with their own sales, and not with the total market. Also, some do not supply every product category. For example, a company may supply face and body care, but not nail care products.

    There is data conflict among the different sources. The conflict can be about the size of the beauty services market, that is, about the numbers of beauty salons, salon employment, and salon turnover. Conflict can be due to a number of factors, the most important of which is that different data sources may count different types of outlets. Official data does not include the large informal beauty services market.
